Voyaging waka recount: Puke, Tim & Jacob

The Tahunas decisions:

Have you ever wondered what the responsibilities of a Tahuna? Well my responsibilities were to make sure that we were heading in the right direction”. I had been memorising the stars and the position of the sun for the past  11 months. I am hoping there are winds that will take us to the new lands. I had to join this voyage because I was the best navigator in the village. I knew I would miss my family and friends but I was looking forward to seeing the new things in the new lands. I was frightened that the waka might sink and I was nervous about how long it might take to get to a land of big mysteries. Everybody on the boat is counting on me for the boat to go in the right direction and I cannot let them down.


First I had to go through a series of training for instance I had to navigate my way through the forest with Harakeke wrapped around my head. Next I had to move through another 3 series to get to train with my Tahuna and the other Tahunas. I was feeling pretty sad because I don’t really want to leave my home.

Next we had to set sail, before it got dark, we also had to make sure that all of our supplies (Whakaputanga)  were ready. We said our final goodbye early sunday (Ratapu)  morning. We went on the waka to seek exciting adventures on the new land. I had to make sure the waka is going the right way because if I mess it up, I will lead the waka into the wrong direction. I cannot let the captain and the other passengers down.

As I was positioning the sun, I could hear birds and I could see that the ocean colour has changed. I was relieved. I did not let anyone down and I lead the waka in the right direction to a new and better land/village. I am still missing my Whanau back at the old village, but I am really happy that I can live in this beautiful land with the rest of my Whanau.

Throughout the voyage, I felt really delighted that I am living at another land. On the other hand I was really sad that I was leaving, however I was happy that I had some of my Whanau with me.

On Tuesday we went to the museum.  It was a lot of fun and we learnt about the early voyaging waka and the tools they used to build them. We learnt how to weave and what the tapa cloth was made out of. We learnt about the scouts and the three parts of the pacific ocean. Oh s'mar and I made this fact poster about the voyaging waka.

Space Jump: Jacob

This morning we had some visitors come to our school and do a show. It was called space jump. The actors were Tye and Naomi. This show is about an alien who is searching for fiction books. The alien wanted to learn how to use her imagination. Everyone on their planet had forgotten how to use their imagination and how to be creative. These mad scientists tried to hunt the alien. She didn't know the Maori language. She asked someone to explain it to her and she looked at the pictures. The main idea of the story was that you can read any book if you get help from someone and don't judge a book by it's cover. I thought the show was really funny.

Why is Facebook a problem?

Are you aware that Facebook is a problem with no solution. Everyone’s secrets and their privacy is revealed once they create an account and log onto it. More than 1 billion people log onto it each day. People lie about their identity or steal other peoples identities. Everyone around the world can log onto Facebook but not everyone is who they really are.

First of all there is cyber bullying. If someone dislikes another person, they put negative posts about that person onto their Facebook page. Some people send negative messages to each other instead of saying things face to face. This causes the police to be involved because it is bullying. Some people even end their lives because they are bullied. If someone is bullied by someone they know, they don’t want to go around them. Everyone is too scared to tell an adult if they are being bullied.

There are a lot of scams on Facebook. Whenever it says, “Click the like button and win a prize” don’t click like. If you do it, it can either be spam or send you videos or pictures that are not good to look at. It can also send everyone on your friends lists that same thing. Think about what you do on Facebook!

Next is viruses. You can click on the like button all you want but all that is doing is putting viruses on your phone, computer and other things you have it downloaded on. The more posts you like per day, the more viruses you get. You will have to pay someone to get all of the viruses of your device.

It is addicting and annoying. It is addicting because most people spend an average of 40% of their time on Facebook. Once you go on it, you can’t stop looking at posts. Have you ever wondered how much time you are spending on Facebook? It is annoying because if you download it onto your phone it will keep bugging you when you are trying to sleep. If you forget to put your phone on silent during a movie,  other people will get annoyed because of all the things that people are posting while you are watching the movie.

There are a lot of posts but each and everyone of them can be a virus, a scam or posted by someone who is not who they really are. Make sure  you make the right choices!

New Zealand is a multicultural  society. Our population keeps on growing because of migration. We live in harmony with each other and show respect to all cultures. People move to NZ and come with great ideas (e.g food) Everyone in NZ has many different beliefs. We are tolerant towards each other. NZ is diverse in cultures and has changed in culture over time. New Zealanders are able to adapt to anything.
